Nipple discharge

September 17, 2024

Nipple discharge, while often benign, can sometimes signal underlying health issues. At Breast Imaging Victoria, we specialise in diagnosing the causes of nipple discharge, utilising advanced imaging techniques to provide clarity and peace of mind.

Understanding Nipple Discharge:

- What is it? Nipple discharge can manifest in various colors and consistencies, ranging from clear to milky or even bloody. Each type can suggest different underlying conditions.

- Why it Matters: Though most nipple discharge is harmless, especially when clear and from multiple ducts, it's important to evaluate any persistent or unusual discharge, particularly if it's from only one nipple or is bloody.

Understanding Nipple Discharge:

- Colors and Consistencies: Discharge can range from clear to milky, yellow, green, or bloody. While most nipple discharge is benign, certain types require prompt evaluation.

- Associated Symptoms: Bloody discharge or discharge from only one nipple can be particularly concerning.

Common Causes and Imaging Insights:

- Intraductal Papillomas: These are benign tumours within the milk ducts that often cause clear or bloody discharge. They are one of the most common causes of abnormal discharge in non-lactating women.

- Potential Risks: Although papillomas are generally benign, there is a small risk they can be associated with atypical cells or precancerous changes, such as atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), especially if they are multiple or occur with other abnormal findings.

Our Imaging Approach:

- Ultrasound: This is the primary tool for evaluating patients with nipple discharge, especially when the discharge is from one duct or is bloody. Ultrasound can visualise ductal lesions like papillomas, helping to determine the cause of discharge.

- Mammography: Used to complement ultrasound, especially for detecting underlying changes in breast tissue and calcifications that might suggest more serious conditions.

When to Seek Imaging:

- If you notice persistent discharge that is clear or bloody, especially if it’s only from one duct.

- If there are other symptoms like a lump, pain, or changes in the breast skin.

At Breast Imaging Victoria, we understand the concerns that come with nipple discharge. Our team is dedicated to providing thorough evaluations using ultrasound and mammography to get to the root of the issue quickly and efficiently. Don’t hesitate to consult your healthcare provider for a referral if you’re experiencing any unusual symptoms.
