Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy

About Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy

An ultrasound-guided biopsy is an imaging-guided procedure which utilises ultrasound technology to help doctors perform needle biopsies.

An ultrasound, or sonogram, is a common procedure which uses sound waves to detect, diagnose, and monitor a variety of conditions. A needle biopsy involves the insertion of a special medical needle to gather tissue samples from lesions and other abnormal growths inside the body.

What is a Breast Ultrasound Biopsy?

During an ultrasound biopsy doctors using ultrasound imaging to locate and guide a specialised needle to the correct area of the body. The needle is then used to collect a tissue sample before being carefully removed from the body.

What Conditions Can Be Diagnosed by an Ultrasound Biopsy?

Ultrasound biopsies are typically used by doctors to check for cancerous cells of the breast and local regions. They can be used to gather Breast tissue samples from different parts of the breast. The most common ultrasound biopsy procedures are used for the:
  • Lymph nodes
  • Breasts

Why Is an Ultrasound Biopsy Required?

An ultrasound biopsy is required when a GP or specialist identify lesions or abnormalities that might be cancerous.

What Are the Risks and Complications of an Ultrasound Biopsy?

There are no identified risks associated with ultrasounds as, unlike CT scans and x-rays, they do not require or expose the patient to radiation.

There is also a low risk of internal bleeding and infection, following a biopsy.

To avoid any complications during the procedures patients simply need to inform the doctor of any allergies, existing conditions or medications they take which may impact the processes used or the results.

What Consequences Are There If the Suspected Condition Is Undiagnosed or Untreated?

Cancer is a serious disease and early detection can greatly increase the likelihood of successful treatment and recovery.

About the Equipment

What Are the Equipment Specifications of an Ultrasound Biopsy?

Only a few pieces of equipment are needed to conduct an ultrasound biopsy:
  • transducer
  • monitor
  • biopsy needle.

What Are the Benefits of an Ultrasound Biopsy?

Ultrasounds are simple, safe procedures to produce detailed images of internal parts of the body.

The use of this technology during a biopsy increases the efficiency of the procedure and accuracy of the results, ensuring that doctors locate and remove a sample of the abnormal tissue as quickly and safely as possible.

Ultrasound Biopsy Procedure Description

What Does an Ultrasound Biopsy Involve?

Ultrasound biopsies are usually administered by our clinic. Click here for our Patient information on Ultrasound Guided Needle Core Biopsy of the Breast.

The procedure itself is very simple, although the exact procedure will vary depending on what type of ultrasound biopsy performed.

Detail the Specific Steps During an Ultrasound Biopsy

When you are ready for the procedure you will lay down on an examination table and a local anaesthetic will be administered. You will be awake for the entire procedure. A gel will be applied to the skin and a transducer passed over the area so that the radiologist can see, via a monitor, where to insert the needle.

One the correct area has been located the needle will be carefully inserted and a tissue sample will be collected. The entire process will be guided by ultrasound imaging.
