Understanding Mastitis: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue that can involve infection. It's most common among breastfeeding mothers but can occur in any woman. Understanding the signs, causes, and treatment options is crucial for quick recovery and continued breastfeeding success, if applicable.

Symptoms to Watch For:

- A tender, swollen, firm, or warm area of the breast
- Red patches on the skin of the breast
- General feeling of illness, similar to flu
- Fever of 38.5°C or higher
- Chills and fatigue

Common Causes:

- Blocked milk ducts
- Bacteria entering the breast, often through a cracked nipple

Treatment Options:

- Continue breastfeeding or pumping to keep milk flowing
- Apply warm compresses and massage the affected area
- Consult a healthcare provider for possible antibiotics if an infection is present
- Over-the-counter pain relievers for comfort
- REST! The under-estimated part of mastitis recovery.

The Role of Imaging in Diagnosing Mastitis:

While the diagnosis of mastitis is often based on symptoms, imaging can play a crucial role, especially in complicated cases or when the condition doesn't improve with initial treatment. Breast imaging can help differentiate mastitis from abscesses or other breast conditions that might require different management strategies. The imaging techniques used:

- Ultrasound: The first choice for imaging when mastitis is suspected, particularly if an abscess is thought to be present. Ultrasound can help distinguish between simple inflammation and an abscess that may need drainage.
- Mammography: Although less commonly used for mastitis, it might be recommended for non-lactating women or if symptoms persist, to rule out other conditions.

When Imaging is Recommended:

- Persistent symptoms despite appropriate treatment
- Suspected abscess formation
- Atypical symptoms that don’t clearly point to mastitis

Breast imaging for mastitis is usually aimed at ensuring the appropriate management path is chosen and to exclude more serious conditions. At Breast Imaging Victoria, our advanced imaging technologies and expert team provide accurate diagnosis and peace of mind for women experiencing breast discomfort or concerns.

Remember, early consultation and treatment are key to managing mastitis effectively.
